If last week's mugginess, chances of showers day after day and hot, sticky conditions weren't enough for Long Islanders, this week brings a repeat performance.

After a primarily dry weekend, including a sunny Sunday, Long Island switches back to an unsettled weather pattern that brings increased humidity.

That’s as showers and thunderstorms at varying times of the day are a possibility through the rest of the week, the National Weather Service said in its late Monday afternoon regional summary.

“Hazy, very warm and a good chance of a late day shower or storm throughout the week,” is how Bruce Avery, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, summed it up.

The weather service is keeping an eye on the potential for heavy rain from late Tuesday through Wednesday night, with “a small chance of localized flash flooding of small streams and creeks as well as urban and poor drainage areas.”

Areas to the west of Long Island are more likely to see the heaviest rainfall, said Tim Morrin, weather service meteorologist in Upton, who described the air mass as "sopping wet."

Look for temperatures to rise to the low to mid 80s this week, and don’t expect much overnight cooling, as lows look to be in the low 70s, the weather service said.

The normal daily high for the week at Long Island MacArthur Airport is 82 degrees, with normal lows of 66 to 67 degrees.
