Commuters start out under mild conditions -- partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low to mid 40s -- and then things warm up nicely, the National Weather Service said. But rain moves in mainly after 5 p.m., so it could be a challenging evening commute. Credit: News 12

The showers and isolated thunderstorms, with high winds and small hail, that swept through the area Thursday are set to clear the region, but not before a gusty evening, the National Weather Service said.

The service issued a special weather statement about 5:40 p.m. saying showers with winds of up to 45 mph were possible until 6:30 p.m. The isolated thunderstorms would move quickly across the Island, and residents should watch out for light objects and small branches that might break off in the gusts.

In the early afternoon, an area of showers and possible thunderstorms passed over northern Nassau and west central Suffolk counties, the service said.

The line of showers was expected to track across the Island through the afternoon, said Carlie Buccola, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

Otherwise, daily highs reached into the low 60s with light and variable winds from the southwest at 10 to 15 mph, the service’s Upton office said earlier.

Thursday night stays cloudy, with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms still in the picture. Those conditions linger until about 10 p.m., he said.

Overnight lows are in the low 40s with a west wind from 5 to 10 mph.

Friday expects to see partly sunny conditions with winds from the north northwest at from 15 to 20 mph and gusting up to 30 mph.

High temperatures are in the low 50s.
