A warm start to the week — featuring on and off rain Tuesday — will give way to a much colder series of days more in line with normal winter temperatures, forecasters said.
Monday's high was in the 50s, about 10 degrees higher than normal for this time of year, and a similar high is expected Tuesday.
Tuesday's precipitation could turn into a wintry mix or snow for southern Connecticut and other parts of the region, but will probably just be rain for Long Island, the National Weather Service said. A cold front Tuesday night will clear it out and push through some cooler, sunny days.
"Highs on Wednesday will be more seasonable with decreasing clouds and gusty winds. Another cold front will pass through Wednesday night and bring below normal temperatures to the area through Friday," the weather service said in its regional summary Monday afternoon.
Temperatures later in the week will struggle to break 32 degrees and overnight lows will sink first into the low-to-mid-20s and later into the teens, the weather service said.
The weekend is looking sunny and warmer, forecasters said.
