Welcome to Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial launch of summer on Long Island.

The weekend was expected to begin and end with dry, sunny skies, forecasters said late afternoon Friday, with chances of rain and thunderstorms sandwiched in between.

Saturday starts out with sunshine, but clouds will be increasing, as chances of showers enter the picture later in the afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures Saturday were expected to head up to the lower 80s for much of the Island, with more noticeable humidity, the weather service said.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm become likely overnight Saturday, with rain also likely through Sunday afternoon, the weather service said.

Monday, Memorial Day, was looking to bring cloudy skies, gradually clearing to allow a splash of sunshine.

Temperatures Sunday and Monday were expected to warm up to the mid- to upper 60s.
