If Saturday felt like late summer, Sunday will feel like early spring with a cold and cloudy slide into Memorial Day.

Temperatures were expected to drop as a cold front moves in overnight into Sunday, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Highs Sunday are expected in the low 60s.

Engle said a slight chance for rain still remains until midmorning, then the day will stay cloudy and overcast.

“It’ll be much cooler, a big change from Saturday,” Engle said.

The service also issued a high rip current hazard risk statement Saturday afternoon, warning of increased potential for rip currents along the South Shore until Sunday evening.

The average high temperature at MacArthur Airport in Islip is usually around 71 on Memorial Day weekend, Engle said.

The drop in temperature follows a muggy Saturday, when highs reached 84 in Islip.

Temperatures will rebound closer to normal on Monday, the holiday, the service said. Highs are expected to be in the low 70s.

Tuesday should be clear with a high near 80, the service said. A chance of showers and thunderstorms returns late next week.
