Long Island weather: A hint of spring, before rain, light snow

Snow and cold-weary Long Islanders will feel like spring is around the corner Sunday when unseasonably mild temperatures in the 50s are predicted, but rain and light snow will move in later in the week.

Sunday will be partly sunny with highs in the mid-50s with temperatures in the upper 40s on the eastern end of Long Island, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service at Upton.

Rain is likely between 9 and 10 p.m. Sunday night and is expected to last through about 5 a.m. Monday, Engle said.

Nighttime lows are expected in the mid-30s, Engle said.

Monday look for mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid-40s and lows in the mid-20s.

Partly sunny skies are predicted for Tuesday when temperatures in the mid-40s are expected for highs and there’s a slight chance of rain and perhaps some freezing rain and “a little snow,” by about midnight, Engle said.

Lows Tuesday night will be in the lower 30s.

Clouds move in Wednesday when highs will be in the mid-40s and there’s and chance of rain at night when it will be breezy with low temperatures in the 40s.

Expect a warm up Thursday when highs will be around 50 and some sun returns. Lows are forecast in the low 30s.

A partly sunny day starts the weekend on Friday when the high temperature drops to the low 40s and lows at night will be in the low 20s.
