As a lead-up to the Fourth of July and the ensuing long weekend, Tuesday  was expected to start out mostly sunny. But there's a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms developing later in the day, forecasters say.

That could mean some heavy rain and a pickup in winds.

Temperatures Tuesday  were expected to rise to the mid-80s, which is the case for Wednesday, as well. That’s just a couple of degrees warmer than what’s normal for this stretch, which is 81 at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Low temperatures, which usually come right around sunrise, are expected to be in the low 70s, above the normal 65.

The forecast is for dry, mostly sunny skies Wednesday on Long Island, the National Weather Service said. “Conditions become warm and increasingly more humid” for Wednesday and Thursday, the Fourth.

Thursday was looking to be mostly sunny, as temperatures could rise to the mid- to upper 80s, forecasters said.

Friday, also hot and humid, brings chances of showers and thunderstorms later in the day and at night.
