It looks like Long Islanders should be in for some perfect fall days this week, though showers and a possible thunderstorm loom Wednesday night and into Thursday, forecasters at the National Weather Service said.

Monday's sunshine with a high of 68 degrees will give way to a clear night with a low of 53 degrees, the weather service said.

Forecasters said Long Islanders can expect mostly sunny skies through Wednesday.

The weather service said Tuesday's high will be pushing 70 degrees during the day with temperatures dropping into the low to mid-50s with a light wind.

Highs should be in the upper 60s Wednesday as well, the weather service said, and near 70 degrees on Thursday but there is a good chance of showers during the day and at night.

A "cold front approaches the area from the west during the day on Thursday with a widespread area of moderate rain expected. Some instability will develop over the area into the afternoon, allowing for at least a chance of embedded thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall," the weather service said in its forecast.

The rain will be adding to the showers that feel earlier this month, with the extreme drought conditions on Long Island starting to ease.

There figures to be plenty of sunshine Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with daytime temperatures hovering around the mid-60s before dropping back to around 50 degrees each night. There's a small chance of some rain before 8 a.m. Friday, the weather service said, but that will likely clear out early, leaving a beautiful, sunny day.
