The treat is a mostly cloudy, calm day with warmer-than-average temperatures for Halloween.

The trick is that rain will arrive past the witching hour of midnight and continue through the night into Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

"Showers develop late this evening, becoming widespread overnight into early Tuesday morning. Showers remain possible Tuesday morning, but most likely across Long Island, with conditions slowly improving," the weather service said.

Monday's high of about 65 degrees is six degrees warmer than the average maximum temperature for the region this time of year, according to weather service records.

The high for this date is 73 degrees, set in Islip in 2004, the weather service said. The all-time low was a frigid 23 degrees, set in 1966.

The rest of the week also figures to be unseasonably warm, with the forecast calling for daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s for the remainder of the week and temperatures pushing 70 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

"The main theme for the long term period will be predominantly dry conditions with above normal temperatures," the weather service said in its forecast discussion. Weather conditions "will allow unseasonably mild temperatures, upwards of 10 to 15 degrees above normal at times, to continue through the weekend."

Overnight temperatures will likely be in the mid-to-upper 40s through Thursday night, with overnight temperatures in the mid-50s Friday and Saturday nights.
