The National Weather Service has issued an advisory warning of strong winds Monday evening and overnight that could gust as high as 50 mph.

"Strong winds will blow down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. A few trees and power lines could be downed. Scattered power outages are expected," the weather service said.

The advisory is for the entire tristate area and lasts from 6 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday with peak winds from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., the weather service said.

Late Monday, the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning through 9:45 p.m. for New York City and parts of western Nassau County. Later, the weather service extended the warning to as far east as Coram and said it would continue until 10:30 p.m. Winds could hit 70 mph, the weather service had said in its first alert.

There is also a gale warning for ocean waters east of Fire Island Inlet through 7 a.m. Tuesday, the advisory said.

The high winds are predicted to follow a cold front that will drop the unusually warm temperatures around 60 degrees Monday to a low of the mid 30s at night.

Showers were also due to fall for several hours Monday evening, forecasters said.

Sunny skies will dominate Tuesday but it will feel much cooler, with a high in the mid 40s, and there is a chance of snow overnight that will mix with rain during Wednesday morning.

More of a rain/snow mix is expected during the day Wednesday and into the evening. Thursday looks to be sunny with a high close to 50 degrees, forecasters said.

Friday night will see more rain that could last through Saturday, along with warm temperatures and strong breezes before Sunday cools down and the sun returns, the weather service said,
