Monday's overnight fog and drizzle will usher in a cloudy Tuesday and a week that will feature just one day where the sun will make an all-day appearance, the National Weather Service said.
Tuesday's overcast conditions will include a high of 58 and light winds. Then, overnight and into the predawn hours of Wednesday, showers should return, forecasters said, with more rain Wednesday night.
Daytime temperatures will hover around 60 degrees Wednesday and will make a brief push into the upper 60s on Thursday. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see highs in the upper 50s.
Thursday will be dry and sunny, the one such day until the weekend, but it clouds up Thursday night and rain returns Friday afternoon and into Friday night, forecasters said.
Saturday there is a 40% chance of rain, which seems less likely in the evening, the weather service said, but the sun returns in force Sunday.
The weather service advised that this is Hurricane Preparedness Week, with hurricane season starting in June and going through Nov. 30. The service said residents should start now to determine their risks, which are greater near the shoreline and in low-lying areas, check on required insurance, assemble disaster supplies and plan an evacuation plan and route — in case of a hurricane.
On average, the weather service said, there will be 14 tropical storms in any given season, seven of which will become hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Hurricanes form over the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and over the Atlantic Ocean, but the weather service reminds that it is storm surge flooding that has accounted for about half the deaths associated with the landfall of storms over the course of the last half-century.
In some cases, hurricanes and tropical storms can also spawn tornadoes. The weather service said 70% of all landfalling hurricanes since 1948 have spawned at least one tornado, while 40% spawned three or more tornadoes. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan spawned 117 tornadoes.
