A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that could hit other parts of the region late Monday night into Tuesday morning should produce no accumulation on Long Island, according to a briefing by the National Weather Service.
But the updated forecast calls for strong winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph for much of the tristate region late Tuesday evening into Wednesday evening and possibly 30 to 40 mph winds continuing into Thursday. The winds could potentially take down weak trees, large branches and power lines, the weather service said. Power outages are possible and gale conditions are expected on the water.
There is a chance of rain and sleet on Long Island shortly after midnight with rain likely, the weather service said. Temperatures overnight are expected to drop near 31 degrees, the weather service said.
“Time to find the weather gear," said News 12 meteorologist Rich Hoffman.
The normal high for this time of year is 38. The record high of 61 degrees was set in 2012.
Rain will also be likely during the day Tuesday, mostly before noon, according to the service. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 48 degrees and low temperatures on Tuesday will be around 40, forecasters said.
