Long Island forecast: Rain makes way for sun over the next two days

April may be the month for showers, but you can hang up your raincoat for the next two days.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers overnight into Wednesday, but the National Weather Service is talking sprinkles — perhaps .03 inches of wetness.

"It's insignificant," said meteorologist Carlie Buccola at the service's Upton office.

April, as of the end of Sunday, had seen 16 of its first 21 days register precipitation at the Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, from just a trace up to three quarters of an inch. In all, 3.22 inches were recorded, 0.12 inches above normal for that stretch.

No hint of a shower is expected Wednesday but clouds are in the forecast before the sunny returns, heralding a clear night, meteorologists said.

"Temperatures are going to be low to mid-60s this week, maybe a few degrees above normal but nothing out of the ordinary to talk about," Buccola said.

The highs will vary by location, said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bill Korbel. The North Shore could reach the low 70s, while the temperature is expected to hit the mid- to high 60s on the South Shore and be cooler on the Twin Forks, he said.

The mild weather will be a break from Monday's rain and localized flood advisory. Korbel said eight-tenths of an inch had fallen by early evening.

The forecast calls for a chance of precipitation returning Thursday night and into Friday, but the weekend is expected to be clear and sunny.
