Long Island weather: Rain sprinkles Monday, then sunny for rest of week

The final workweek in March starts Monday with cloudy skies, the chance of a stray shower and temperatures heading up to around 50 degrees, forecasters say. After that, look for a couple of sunny, cooler days before a trip back to the 50s to round out the week.

A cold front is passing through the region, and there could be rain sprinkles through Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

As of close to noon Monday, the temperature at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma was 49 degrees, with overcast skies and light winds. The normals for the day are 50 degrees for the high and 34 for the low. Wantagh and Hempstead were at 50, with Southold and Montauk at 46.

There could be “some breaks of sunshine this afternoon,” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist. Once the clouds move out, they'll stay gone, with Monday's sprinkles being the only precipitation expected for the week. 

Early morning temperatures Tuesday are forecast for the upper 20s, this as winds will be picking up, according to the National Weather Service. The day is looking at highs in the mid-40s, feeling cooler with wind chill.

Wednesday should be similar, but minus the winds and accompanying chill. 

The week should end with sunny days. Thursday's highs should be above 50, and the highs should be in the mid-50s on Friday and Saturday. Those highs could reach into the 60s in western Nassau County and in areas away from the water, Hoffman said.

"Much warmer weather Friday and Saturday," Hoffman said.
