Long Island weather: Possible rainy, stormy swipe from Barry remnants ahead
The workweek starts with pleasant, summer conditions for Long Island, followed by chances of a rainy, stormy swipe Wednesday afternoon through Thursday from the remnants of Hurricane Barry, forecasters say.
That’s as Long Islanders will also need to gear up for some steamy conditions late in the week into the weekend. Monday may be comfortable, but “heat will be building through the week” said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.
Temperatures Wednesday could be heading up to the high 80s, even 90s thanks to that tropical air, as we also get chances of showers and thunderstorms right through Thursday, with the potential for some downpours, the National Weather Service said.
Friday could well be Day 1 of the season’s first heat wave, which is at least three days in a row of 90 degrees or up. Temps in the low to mid-90s are forecast for areas of Long Island those days, with just slightly cooler temps for the South Shore and East End, said Faye Morrone, weather service meteorologist in Upton.
But 90-degree temps are not the worst of it. “If you live in the eastern two thirds or so of the US, you're going to be hearing a LOT about the heat index in the coming week,” the weather service said in a tweet.
That’s what it’s expected to feel like when humidity levels are added into the mix. For this weekend, that could be the low 100s, Hoffman said.
Some things to do in preparation:
- How’s your air conditioner sounding? Rattling? Sputtering? Maybe time for a replacement?
- You can do the same for any older, frail people you know. Also, keep an eye out on their behalf for announcements for cooling centers that might open.
- Can you reschedule any outdoor activities? How much water do you have on hand?
