The new workweek on Long Island could start out with some rain Monday before the area gets two sunny — and hot — days Tuesday and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service of Sunday night said Monday had a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high temperature of about 82 degrees, one degree lower than the normal high for the date in Islip. A south wind of 6 to 11 mph could increase to 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon with gusts as high as 28 mph.

The weather service said there will be a high rip current risk on South Shore beaches from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. The service warned, "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."

Monday night showers are considered likely — the chance of precipitation is pegged at 60% — while the low temperature should be around 72 degrees.

Tuesday and Wednesday are both expected to be mostly sunny. Thursday there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., and Friday will be sunny, the weather service said.

Daily high temperatures Tuesday through Friday are expected to be in the low 90s.
