Long Island weather: Cooler week with rain likely Tuesday

Long Island's forecast for the week ahead includes below average temperatures and rain likely for midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

After a partly cloudy Sunday night with a low of 43, Monday morning will be partly sunny with a high near 59 and southeast winds between 6 to 9 mph. At night temperatures drop to the mid 40s with mostly cloudy skies and southeast wind around 7 mph, the weather service said.

A 50% chance of showers is forecast for a cloudy Tuesday with a high near 59 and south winds around 6 mph. Clouds and a 50% chance of showers continue at night with lows in the mid 40s, forecasters said, and calm winds.

"Tuesday night into early Wednesday has the best chance for rain and other that the week is fairly quiet with temperatures below normal," said James Connolly, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The average high temperature for this time of year is around 62 and the average low is 44, Connolly said.

Wednesday is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 50s and partly cloudy at night with a low around 37. 

Thursday will also be mostly sunny with a high near 57 and partly cloudy at night with a low around 40.

The high for Friday will be close to 60 with mostly sunny skies. Partly cloudy skies and a low around 41 are forecast for Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.

A high in the low 60s is predicted for Saturday with mostly sunny skies. Nighttime will be mostly cloudy with lows in the mid 40s.

The forecast for Sunday includes partly sunny skies with a high near 60.
