Long Island weather: Rainy Sunday, then high wind watch

Long Islanders should expect a rainy Sunday morning followed by strong, potentially damaging winds at night.

A high wind watch is in effect Sunday night through Monday afternoon, with the National Weather Service calling for sustained winds blowing 25 to 35 mph and gusting up to 60 mph.
"Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines," the weather service said  in a statement issued Saturday afternoon. "Scattered power outages are possible."

As much as 1¼ inches of rain is expected early Sunday into the afternoon, said meteorologist Carlie Buccola of the National Weather Service in Upton.

High temperatures are predicted to be in the low  to mid-50s on Sunday, she said.

Forecasters said Monday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high in the low 40s and wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees as the blustery conditions persist.

It's expected to be breezy Monday night with winds blowing around 14 to 24 mph and gusting as high as 44 mph, forecasters said. 

Chilly temperatures are expected to arrive through the rest of the week with highs in the 30s and lows mostly in the 20s through Friday, meteorologists said.
