The good chance for rain for Thursday afternoon has lessened to mostly a slight chance for showers, the National Weather Service said.

There’s still potential for a quick evening shower, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist based in Upton, but any such showers would be “widely scattered.”

So far, other than for “a few drops,” most of the rain action has stayed to the east, Engle said at about 3:30 p.m. That’s as the line of showers “seemed to break apart” before impacting the Island.

Still, as of just before 3 p.m., Long Island MacArthur Airport was registering 72 degrees. Don’t start thinking of any broken records, though, as the record high for the day is 78 degrees, set in 1990, Engle said.

The overnight hours bring mild conditions, he said, with Friday looking at mostly sunny skies and highs of about 60 degrees.
