Long Island weather: Potential for snow on Saturday

Spring is expected to look and feel a whole lot like winter again this weekend.

The National Weather Service says there’s potential for 2 to 3 inches of snow Saturday on Long Island.

“Light to moderate precipitation is forecast during the day Saturday through early Saturday night,” according to the weather service. “Initially, it will be cold enough for the precipitation to develop as snow [and] change to rain as temperatures rise into the low 40s, then back to snow as temperatures fall through the 30s.”

As for Thursday’s weather, conditions on Long Island are a little milder and a lot windier than in the past few days, the National Weather Service said.

And wet comes into play, too. The service’s Upton office said showers are expected across Nassau and Suffolk counties, with thunderstorms possible in the afternoon hours.

Rainfall amounts Thursday could be as much as three-quarters of an inch, the service said.

Daily highs are in the upper 50s, and winds from the south increase throughout the day, blowing at 30 mph with some gusts to 50 mph.

The service has issued a wind advisory in effect until 8 p.m. and warned residents of the possibility of downed trees and power lines.

A wind advisory means sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph or gusts of 46 to 57 mph are expected or occurring, the service said.
