Keep the umbrella handy. It's a day of scattered showers for Long Island, starting mainly after noon.

The National Weather Service forecast Thursday is for one-tenth to one-quarter inch of rainfall during the daytime hours.

Daily highs in the low 60s are expected with a brisk south wind, 9 to 15 mph gusting to 26 mph, the service's Upton office said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said morning drizzle and fog will give way to scattered showers.

Those showers should linger until as late as 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Hoffman said.

Skies clear overnight, with winds shifting west at 13 to 20 mph. Overnight lows are in the mid to upper 40s.

Then, brace for some stiff west winds on Friday, Hoffman said.

It will be mostly sunny, but strong west winds 20 to 30 mph will pester Nassau and Suffolk counties all day long on Friday.

The service said some winds could reach as high as 40 mph as the storm system leaves Long Island.

Daily highs in the mid to upper 50s on Friday will be around 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, the service said.
