Long Islanders may need their umbrellas Saturday as showers are expected to linger throughout the day ahead of drier weather to close out this weekend.
After a mostly cloudy Friday, showers are expected at night into Saturday morning, National Weather Service Meteorologist Dominic Ramunni told Newsday. Temperatures will be in the low 70s and showers are likely going to persist into part of Saturday.
“Might not be a bad idea to hold onto that umbrella, especially if you’re going to be outdoors tomorrow," Ramunni said. “It’s not going to be an all day wash out, but certainly going to allow for at least the possibility of hit or miss showers at least into the afternoon before conditions dry out."
Sunday’s weather will be drier and temperatures in areas closer to New York City will be in the lower 80s, Ramunni said. Summerlike heat and humidity will return next week as Long Island prepares to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
A heat wave is possible for Long Island, but Ramunni said he’s not convinced. The NWS defines a heat wave as three consecutive days of 90 degrees or greater.
“We are going to see temperatures increase, likely into the upper 80s by mid next week, Wednesday, Thursday ... and perhaps even touching the lower 90s as we go into the start of the holiday weekend," Rammuni said.
While the possibility of showers during the holiday weekend can’t be ruled out, there isn’t a “widespread washout" forecast, according to Ramunni.
