Erin McCambridge enjoyed the clear skies along the bluff in Kings Park last Thursday.

A rainstorm Monday was expected to continue through the morning commute with steady precipitation and strong winds, forecasters said.

The storm, could bring thunderstorms and flooding to coastal areas on the South Shore of Nassau and Suffolk counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain was expected "right during that morning commute and the school bus pickup time, unfortunately," said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist with the weather service in Upton.

The weather service issued a flood statement that said "the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline" may have "brief minor flooding" on Monday.

"But we’re not looking at widespread coastal flooding," Ciemnecki said.

Monday's high will be near 64, with southwest winds of 13-17 mph. Gusts could approach 30 mph, forecasters said.

Monday’s rain, added to last week's rainfall, will most likely bring precipitation levels up to normal for the month. But for the year, the region is nearly 9 inches below normal, Ciemnecki added. "We still have quite the deficit to overcome."

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, but there is a chance of showers Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday will again be clear, according to the weather service forecast.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s on Tuesday through Thursday.
