Say goodbye to mild January days for awhile.
The mercury tumbles overnight from Sunday's record high of 58 degrees in Islip and Monday morning brings bitter cold, wind chills and about 2 inches of snow for eastern Long Island, the National Weather Service said.
The high Monday will be in the 30s and with winds of up to 16 mph blowing, it will feel like the 20s, the weather service said. Skies clear Monday night but the mercury falls again to about 20 degrees with wind chills of between 15 and 20 degrees.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman held a brief news conference Sunday to let residents know the county was ready for "some kind of a snow event."
But while there was a winter storm warning for up to 6 inches for southern New Jersey and points south Monday, none was issued for Long Island as of Sunday evening.
Dominic Ramunni, of the National Weather Service, said Long Islanders can expect about 2-3 inches of snow. Eastern Long Island and the South Shore are expected to get the most, forecasters said.
"Anything higher than four inches in parts of the Island is unlikely," Ramunni said, adding that the system is likely to clear out Monday night.
A coastal flood advisory was issued, however, for much of Long Island from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, warning of minor flooding "in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline."
The sun comes out for a dry Tuesday with high temperatures in the upper 30s. A 50% chance of rain is in the forecast for Wednesday and temperatures bounce back up to above normal, with a high around 50. The lows both days will dip into the low 30s.
