Long Island forecast: Coastal storm moves in Monday night into Tuesday
Long Islanders should expect a wet and windy start to their workweek with a coastal storm expected to impact the area Monday night through Tuesday.
There will be a 30% chance of rain Monday morning with winds around 11 mph. High temperatures will reach 71 degrees, the National Weather Service said. At night, a coastal storm is expected to arrive with a 90% chance of rain and wind gusts up from 30-45 mph.
The wind, especially along the coast, could bring down some trees and power lines, the weather service said. Minor coastal flooding may also be a factor.
"It should be a pretty messy several days until Wednesday," a spokesman for the weather service said.
The track and intensity of the storm remains uncertain but Long Island will be under a flash flood watch starting Monday at 8 p.m. until Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The rain will last into Tuesday with a high of 64 degrees and winds up to 18 mph. The Twin Forks has the highest chance of seeing strong winds with gusts upward of 40-45 mph, a spokesman for the weather service said.
The Island should see a widespread total of 2-4 inches of rain. Strong winds, beach erosion and rough waves at area beaches are expected from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. There is a gale watch for coastal waters from 8 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday
The rain will slow down on Wednesday with a 30% chance of showers before 2 p.m., forecasters said. The day will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 62 degrees and a nighttime low around 48 degrees.
Thursday will be mostly sunny with a high near 60 degrees and a low of around 48 degrees at night.
