The hot weather will continue through the weekend, with temperatures in the 90s and high humidity Sunday that is expected to feel like triple digits, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service issued a heat advisory through 8 p.m. Sunday. A high temperature of up to 90 degrees is predicted for Sunday, with high humidity levels expected to raise the heat index to up to 104 degrees. Temperatures along the South Shore are expected to be a bit cooler and max out in the 80s, meteorologist Bill Goodman said.

Forecasters warn that the heat could cause illness, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and are advising seniors and anyone with chronic health problems to stay inside. The heat advisory warns that homes without air conditioning can feel hotter than outdoor temperatures. Anyone working outside is advised to seek frequent breaks indoors or in the shade.

There is a risk of rip currents on Sunday and Monday, Goodman said.

The temperatures are forecast to remain in the high 80s Monday, but a cold front moving into the region Sunday night and Monday will cool things down a bit, Goodman said. Storms are possible after 3 p.m. Monday and likely Monday night.

Goodman called the cold front a “typical heatwave-busting cold front with thunderstorms.” No widespread flooding is expected, but heavy rain and gusty winds are possible. The chance of storms will linger into Tuesday.

Temperatures the rest of the week are to remain in the mid-80s, with overnight lows in the upper 60s and 70s. Another chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible Thursday, when temperatures will begin climbing to the high 80s, Goodman said.
