Long Island weather should remain fair through the early part of the week with highs hitting the 70s.

A sunny Sunday is in store with clear skies and a high of 76, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be cooler near waterways.

The clear weather will hang around Monday and Tuesday with highs in the mid- to upper 70s and lows in the 50s until late Tuesday night, when the weather service predicts rain will move into the region.

Thunderstorms are possible “pretty much all day” Wednesday, meteorologist James Tomasini said. Showers could linger through Thursday.

Flooding isn’t expected, Tomasini said, adding that the weather should dry up Friday.

Meteorologists offered a warning about going into the water — while temperatures warm up, water temperatures are below 60 degrees. Forecasters said cold water immersion can lead to hypothermia within minutes and loss of dexterity to swim or perform other simple tasks.
