More sunny, warm weather is expected Sunday and Monday on Long Island with rain not seen as a possibility until late Monday night.

The National Weather Service said that Sunday should be sunny with a high near 50 degrees and a southwest wind of 5 to 11 mph. Sunday night is expected to be mostly clear with a low around 35.

Sunny skies and a high near 50 are also expected on Monday.

“High pressure remains well to the south and moves off the North Carolina coast on Monday. Dry conditions are expected to dominate the local area as a result,” the weather service said in its regional summary on Saturday afternoon.

Monday night, however, rain could return to Long Island. There is a 20% chance of precipitation after midnight.

Tuesday rain is likely mainly after noon, the weather service said. The chance of precipitation is 60%. The high temperature is expected to be near 47 degrees.

Wednesday’s forecast is nearly identical to Tuesday’s with more rain expected after noon.

Thursday the chance of rain drops just a bit, to 40%, according to the weather service.

Finally, mostly sunny skies are expected to return on Friday, with a high temperature near 38.

Unless a cold snap develops, the 2019-2020 winter will have an average temperature of 37.3; the warmest was the winter of 2015-2016, when the mean was 39.1, said Matthew Wunsch, NWS meteorologist.

The winter of 2019-2020 also could be notable for another reason: No snow has fallen this month at Long Island MacArthur Airport, LaGuardia or Kennedy airports, the NWS said. "If there is no trace of snow for the rest of the month, this would be the only time on record that these sites have had no snowfall in the month of February," it said.
