Labor Day weekend forecast for Long Island: Warming up with chances of rain

The holiday weekend will get progressively warmer leading up to Labor Day, but not before a bit of rain Saturday across Long Island, forecasters said.

“There are some spotty showers now — a few drops of rain and those will continue through the morning,” said Faye Morrone, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. “By afternoon, we should dry out for anyone who does see rain.”

Saturday starts off with plenty of clouds, but those should break up by the afternoon, Morrone said. Long Islanders can expect highs in the mid- to upper 70s.

"It’s going to be an OK day today," said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Bruce Avery. "Not a terrific day."

Sunday is expected to be warmer and sunnier, forecasts show, with temperatures around 80 degrees. There is a slight chance of rain Sunday morning into the afternoon.

Monday, the Labor Day holiday, should be ideal for the beach and barbecues as temperatures will be in the mid-80s, Morrone said. There is again a slight chance of rain in the afternoon.
