Long Island weather: Sunday to be warm with chance of thunderstorms

Weather for Sunday will be warm, but expect possible "severe" thunderstorms in the afternoon which could last into the night, said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Islip, which issued a hazardous weather outlook.

Rain from Saturday night is unlikely to last into Sunday morning, said Matthew Wunsch with the National Weather Service in Islip, adding that for the month of June, the weather is abnormally dry. 

Temperatures will be in the middle to upper 80s for most of Sunday morning, Wunsch said.

A marginal risk for severe weather is possible after 2 p.m. Sunday and last until 9 p.m., as wind gusts are expected in excess of 58 mph. This could damage trees and power lines and result in scattered power outages throughout the tristate area, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

After that, Monday is the only day of the workweek when no storms are anticipated.

Downpours could alternate with sunny skies through Friday, the weather service said, though it will be a bit cooler with temperature highs mainly in the low 80s.
