Long Island weather: Snow/rain mix and possible snow shower

Look for continuing rain through the Monday evening commute, followed by a rain/snow mix before midnight that turns to all snow briefly and clears out by morning, the National Weather Service said.

Little or no snow accumulation is expected, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist based in Upton.

Temperatures are taking a dive overnight — from Monday’s highs in the upper 40s down to the upper 20s. In anticipation, the weather service has issued a freeze warning that’s in effect from 8 p.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the coldest stretch expected from midnight to around sunrise, the service said.

That means that sensitive plants, unless protected or brought inside, will be killed by the blast of cold.

Some record-low temperatures are possible, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, including overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.

Early April’s cold spell continues Tuesday, which brings dry skies and breezy conditions, with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the low 20s. A freeze warning has also been issued for 8 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Unseasonably cold temperatures — though not as low as Monday and Tuesday nights, Engle said — are expected to persist through the weekend, with the exception of a rebound Wednesday night into Thursday, which is expected to see more seasonable highs in the upper 50s.

However, the tide could be turning next week, with the Climate Prediction Center indicating a slight tilt — a 33 to 40 percent chance — back toward above-normal temperatures for the April 12-18 time frame.
