Long Island weather: April showers start the work week following warm, sunny weekend

After a sunny and warm weekend, rain is expected to give Long Islanders a real case of the Mondays.  

After Sunday brought sunny skies and high temperatures in the 60s, rain was expected to start after midnight and last on Long Island until around 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton. Low temperatures Sunday night were expected to be in the upper 40s. 

Chances of rain will linger throughout the day Monday and end by nightfall. High temperatures will "vary quite a bit," ranging in the mid-to-upper 50s along the South Shore and in the low-to-mid 60s elsewhere on the Island, weather service meteorologist Faye Morrone said. Temperatures will drop to the mid-to-upper 40s at night.

Rain is possible again Tuesday afternoon and is expected to dry out at night. High temperatures will be in the mid-to-upper 50s and lows around 40.

“The rainfall is really kind of common in the springtime,” meteorologist Tim Morrin said.

Wednesday and Thursday are both expected to be dry with high temperatures in the mid 50s and lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s at night.

Rain could strike again Friday around noon and last until Saturday. Friday's high temperature will be in the upper 50s. 

Average temperatures for this time of year at Islip are a high around 55 and a low around 39.
