A powerful storm is expected to hit the region Monday, with heavy rain and strong winds that could be potentially damaging, the National Weather Service said in its updated forecast late Sunday afternoon.
A wind advisory is in effect for Long Island and coastal southeastern Connecticut between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, according to forecasters. The weather service typically issues a wind advisory when there's an expectation of sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph for an hour or more, and gusts of 46 to 57 mph for any amount of time.
The rain is expected to start after 1 a.m., Monday with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m., the weather service said earlier Sunday. Up to two inches of rain is possible during the day with the potential for another half-inch Monday night. The high is expected to reach into the lower 60s, but the day will be windy, with near 50 mph gusts possible.
On Monday night, the temperature is expected to drop into the upper 40s.
The weather service said the track and intensity of the storm will determine the magnitude and extent of the winds.
Minor flooding is possible, as is beach erosion across the South Shore, according to the weather service.
The chance of rain decreases to about 40% Tuesday under mostly cloudy skies and with an expected high in the upper 50s. Conditions are forecast to improve Wednesday with mostly sunny skies and a high in the mid-40s.
Thursday and Friday look to be sunny with highs around 50 degrees. Then there is a chance of rain Saturday under partly sunny skies and a high in the mid-50s.
