Forecasters said it will be sunny Thursday across Long Island with temperatures in the low 80s and a light wind.

Although Hurricane Gert is passing south and east of Long Island, it is still causing ocean swells on the South Shore, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.

“We’re still seeing some rough seas out there, so be careful swimming on the South Shore,” Hoffman said, although there is only a moderate risk of rip current Thursday after a high risk earlier in the week.

Rain could develop overnight and into the day Friday, the National Weather Service said.

Storms Friday afternoon could bring gusty winds and heavy rain, the weather service said. It will be otherwise cloudy on Friday with a high temperature in the high 70s, the service said.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday morning, but Sunday should be sunny, the weather service said.

Hoffman said he expected the rain Saturday would move out by 9 a.m.

Weekend temperatures will range from daytime highs in the mid 80s to nighttime lows in the low 70s.

The workweek resumes Monday with sunny skies, but rain could move in the Tuesday night, the weather service said.
