Increasing clouds and a chance of early evening rain push aside a sunny start to Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

The day opened with sunshine over most of Nassau and Suffolk counties, with daily highs in the upper 40s, the service’s Upton office said.

“Wet weather developing Tuesday night,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said. “We could see one-quarter inch to a half-inch of rain.”

Periods of rain continue Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, Hoffman said.

Overnight conditions include winds shifting to the northeast at 5 to 10 mph and low temperatures in the 40s.

On Wednesday, it’s cloudy with a chance of showers and daily highs pushing toward 50 degrees.

Rain is in the forecast for Thursday, too, with the possibility of light snow during the morning commute, Hoffman said.

Expect gradual clearing on Friday as temperatures turn colder, with daily highs on Friday and Saturday ranging from the high 30s to the low 40s.
