Long Island weather: Sunny Wednesday with highs near 70

Clear, sunny conditions unfurl across Long Island on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Daily highs push toward 70 degrees, with winds from the northeast at 8 to 11 mph.

“Mostly sunny and nice,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said of Wednesday’s forecast.

And based on a shift eastward by Hurricane Matthew, that comfortable fall weather is expected to continue through the Columbus Day weekend, Hoffman said.

“Most of the Columbus Day weekend looks OK, thanks to a change in the storm track,” he said. The next few days look to be cool mornings and mild afternoons.

Hoffman said the current track shows Hurricane Matthew staying about 500 miles south of Long Island.

That translates to about a 30 percent chance for rain on Long Island, mostly for Saturday and Sunday, and high temperatures for both days in the mid 60s, normal for this time of year, he said.

Wednesday night skies remain clear but it gets a bit chilly, with overnight lows in the low 50s.

Thursday is mostly sunny, with highs in the low 70s, Hoffman said.

Friday is mostly sunny, with daily highs again in the low 70s.

Saturday and Sunday offer a chance of rain, thanks to a passing cold front. Hoffman also calls for breezy conditions and clouds for both days.
