The National Weather Service forecast calls for mostly sunny skies under winds from 18 to 25 mph, gusting up to 35 mph.

Friday kicks off part of wind-whipped weekend across Long Island.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for stiff winds from the west and northwest for much of the weekend, with Friday getting mostly sunny skies and winds from 23 mph gusting to 40 mph.

Daily highs in the mid 50s also are expected.

The winds were causing arrival delays at LaGuardia Airport Friday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Matt Hammer said that except for winds coming from the west, Friday will be a nice day.

"Mainly sunny to start," Hammer said, "with a mix of sun and clouds in the afternoon."

Those winds subside slightly, at 10 to 20 mph, but Hammer said overnight lows in the upper 30s will feel more like the 20s because of the wind chill factor.

Saturday and Sunday, temperatures dip enough so that combined with the winds it again will feel colder, he said.

Saturday highs are in the upper 40s, with winds shifting northwest from 10 to 20 mph.

On Sunday, the winds let up a bit and shift again, blowing from the west at 9 to 13 mph.

Daily highs in the low 50s are likely.
