High winds and storms charged through the tristate area Sunday night, the National Weather Service said, leaving thousands on Long Island in the dark.

A tornado warning for Suffolk from the National Weather Service expired at 10 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm warning expired at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Power outages totaled 8,900 as of 10:15 p.m. Sunday — down from more than 10,000 earlier in the night — as gusts of more than 50 mph buffeted Long Island overnight along with rain and scattered thunderstorms. A strong cold front had brought in the severe weather, including lines of squalls that battered the region, the weather service said.

Jeremy Walsh, a spokesman for PSEG Long Island, said shortly after 10 p.m.: "The cold front with heavy rain and strong wind gusts passing across Long Island has caused outages. Crews are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power. They will continue through the night to assess damage and restore power."

A wind advisory was still in effect until midnight Sunday.

Winds should calm down Monday, forecasters said, and it will be dry yet cool under sunny skies with a high hovering around 50.

Then Tuesday again brings a slight chance of rain after noon with a high in the upper 40s. At night the low is predicted to drop down below freezing.

The rest of the week looks dry beginning with a sunny Wednesday when the high is expected to top out around 40 degrees before the nighttime low falls to the upper 20s.

Thursday’s forecast says the high will be in the upper 40s while it could reach the mid-50s for both Friday and Saturday.
