Long Island forecast: Heat advisories issued for Monday and Tuesday
Load up the freezer with ice pops — it's going to be hot and humid on Long Island and the region this week.
Temperatures are forecast to hover near 90 degrees through Wednesday and Long Islanders can expect that it will feel even hotter, forecasters said.
With rising heat and humidity, the National Weather Service predicted the heat indexes to be between 95 to 104 degrees for much of the tristate area Monday and Tuesday.
The heat index is a measure of how hot it feels when factoring in humidity. Residents are advised to use extreme caution when that index falls between 90 and 103 degrees as there is an increased risk of heat strokes, cramps or exhaustion, especially with prolonged exposure or physical activity.
Monday will be sunny with a high near 90 degrees, but the humidity will make it feel as hot as 96 degrees in Islip.
James Tomasini, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, said a normal high for June 28 in Islip is 81 degrees.
A heat advisory will be in effect for Nassau County and northwestern Suffolk County from noon Monday until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Highs for the rest of Suffolk are expected to be several degrees lower.
Heat advisories are issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Tuesday looks mostly sunny, though a 20% of thunderstorms exists, with a high near 90. Heat indexes are projected to be in the upper 90s for Nassau and lower 90s for most of Suffolk.
The hot weather extends to Wednesday with a high once more near 85 but with a 40% chance of thunderstorms and showers after 8 p.m.
Showers are likely with a possible thunderstorm Thursday, and with that rain comes a little break in the heat. Thursday’s high is expected to be in the mid-80s.
Showers and thunderstorms could continue Friday and Saturday with much more bearable heat. The highs are predicted to be about 80 Friday and then in the upper 70s for Saturday.
