Heavy rain possible Wednesday after sunny Tuesday, forecasters say
Temperatures across Nassau and Suffolk counties were in the upper 40s, and daily highs in the high 50s are expected, the National Weather Service's Upton office said.
Following Tuesday's mostly sunny conditions, Wednesday brings the potential for heavy rain, possibly an inch and a half for Long Island, the National Weather Service said.
For areas to the west, including Nassau County, lighter showers could get started around 6 to 8 a.m., spreading east through midmorning to early afternoon, said Faye Barthold, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.
Conditions for the Wednesday evening commute "are not looking good," she said, with heaviest rainfall, and possibly isolated thunderstorms, expected from midafternoon Wednesday through Thursday at around 2 a.m. That's as of the late afternoon Monday forecast.
Strongest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts near 40 mph, are expected Wednesday afternoon and evening, the weather service said.
The chance for minor coastal flooding, enhanced by a full moon, starts increasing Tuesday with "high tide cycles along the flood prone areas of the western Great South Bay," said Gary Conte, also a weather service meteorologist. Wednesday through Thursday could also bring widespread minor coastal flooding.
Now is the time to clear road drains that might be clogged with fallen leaves or debris, he said, to reduce any minor urban flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
