Long Island weather: Heavy rain, gusty winds and then a deep chill Friday night

Tropical Storm Zeta's remnants, combined with coastal low pressure, are bringing what the National Weather Service calls "moderate to potentially brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds" to the region through Friday.

There might be some light snow from the system with accumulations upstate before it comes to an end Friday morning. And a freeze watch has been issued for late Friday night into Saturday morning with temperatures as low as the mid-20s.

Before that though, the weather service said one to two inches of rain will fall on Long Island.

In a Thursday evening report, the weather service said sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph are will start kicking up Thursday evening into Friday afternoon, especially in the city and along the coast. There could be some mild to moderate flooding during Friday morning's high tide along Jamaica Bay, Great South Bay, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and Western Long Island Sound.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for southwestern Suffolk and southern Nassau from 7 a.m. through noon Friday.

Due to Zeta, the weather service said, "Gale warnings go into effect early this evening on a gusty northeast wind. The seas out on the ocean by tonight will build to 6 to 10 feet from west to east," before slowly calming Friday.

As Zeta pulls away from the coast, Long Islanders on Friday can anticipate a chilly day with more rain and wind gusts up to 22 mph. Odds of downpours are 90%.

"Friday night will likely be the first widespread freeze for much of the region," the weather service said. Highs will only be in the mid-40s.

Saturday’s sunshine should allow temperatures to rebound near 50 degrees during the day, with a cool Halloween evening. "Another chilly night is in store Saturday night with temperatures around freezing inland (and) ranging to the upper 30s to near 40 elsewhere," the weather service said.

Sunday morning may start with a few showers — the odds are 30% — before the sun breaks out. Highs around 60 degrees are expected.

Both Monday and Tuesday should feature sunshine and daytime highs around 50 degrees.

Wednesday will be a close match but warmer.
