Long Island can expect a rainy, breezy Thursday, with precipitation heavy at times, the National Weather Service said.

An approaching frontal system will deliver rain and strong southerly winds across Nassau and Suffolk counties, the service's Upton office said.

Cloudy skies will give way to the rain, right about the time of the evening commute, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.

"Expect cloudy skies with periods of rain," Hoffman said. "It will be windy and warm."

Daily highs are likely to be in the low to mid 60s; the daily record high for Thursday is 63 degrees in 1999.

Winds from the southeast will be between 20 and 22 mph, with gusts up to 33 mph, the service said.

New precipitation amounts will range from one-quarter to one-half inch.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible before 1 a.m. Friday, with rain lingering through the overnight hours.

Nighttime rainfall amounts could be as much as another half-inch.

Friday morning showers are possible before 9 a.m.; clouds give way to mostly sunny skies, with daily highs in the mid 50s.
