Long Island weather: Heavy rain, gusty winds Friday

Overnight showers will lead to a day of heavy rain Friday but temperatures will still remain unseasonably high, forecasters said.

It should reach 66 degrees on Long Island Friday and gusty winds of up to 20 mph will accompany the rain that will fall most of the day, the National Weather Service said.

New rainfall amounts of between one and two inches are predicted for Friday and there is also a chance of showers both Friday night and, more likely, Saturday morning, the weather service said.

Saturday will still see a high of an unseasonable 60 degrees. Then, come Sunday, say goodbye to the above-normal warmth, at least for now.

David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Long Island will experience "a pattern change" in regard to temperatures next week.

On Sunday, the temperatures will be in the 50s, while come Monday and Tuesday "we’re struggling to get above 50 during the day and it will be in the 30s at night," Stark said.

"It’s going to feel like November for sure," Stark said, although he added "there’s no chance of seeing snow right now" and "we’re not seeing anything in the prospects for that."

Sunday should be sunny but the predicted daytime high of 52 degrees — around 10 degrees cooler than it will be Thursday and Friday — starts a cooler stretch of temperatures in the low 50s that will last through about Wednesday, the weather service said.

During the nights, after Friday’s predicted low of around 45 degrees, temperatures will slide to the upper- to mid-30s.

And they may sink, at least in spots, to around freezing, which would encourage more autumn leaves to reveal their inner colors — including brilliant yellows, oranges and reds concealed by chlorophyl's green all spring and summer.
