While the sun peeked through in some parts of Long Island Thursday afternoon, forecasters said occasional showers and a possible storm will return Thursday night and, on and off, through Saturday.

The good news? The forecast for Independence Day, Sunday, is for dry, clear and cooler conditions.

The heavy rain that hovered over Long Island Thursday was just ahead of a "a slow-moving cold front" bringing cooler temperatures and lower humidity to the area into the Fourth of July weekend.

There's still a 90% chance of showers and a possible storm with gusty winds Thursday night. Then, anywhere between a 30% and 60% chance of showers, off and on, through Saturday night.

Sunday, however, is predicted to be mostly sunny.

The system coming through Thursday should give Long Islanders a break from the oppressive weather that marked the beginning of the week, when the combination of high heat and humidity led the weather service to issue a heat advisory.

The peak temperature for Thursday was in the low to mid 80s, down from the low to mid 90s of the week's start. Highs are expected to go down even further in coming days and drop into the 70s through the Fourth of July, according to the latest forecast.

The weather service is also warning of a moderate to high risk of rip currents Friday at South Shore ocean beaches, primarily in Suffolk.
