Rain is expected to move in Thursday night ahead of a warm Friday when showers could be heavy at times, the National Weather Service said.

There will be strong winds with Friday's rain, starting Thursday night and going through Friday. Gusts could reach 35 mph Friday afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

Highs on Friday are predicted to soar into the 60s for Long Island, ushering in a possible thunderstorm, and then drop for the weekend.

"High pressure from Central Canada will gradually build in Friday night into the weekend," said the weather service's regional summary Thursday. "Temperatures will exhibit a cooling trend and get gradually closer to normal thereafter through the weekend."

The weekend so far looks to be sunny, with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s, the weather service said.

Monday is also expected to be sunny, with a high near 43 degrees. Rain could return overnight, however, and continue into Tuesday, the weather service said.

Tuesday's high will be in the low 50s, the weather service said.

Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny, and the high will likely be in the low 50s again.
