Friday is expected to be sunny and — for January — warm on Long Island, but while relatively high temperatures will remain Saturday, it also looks like it will be quite wet.
After cloudy skies Thursday night and a low around 26 degrees, the National Weather Service forecast for Friday calls for mostly sunny skies, a high temperature near 46 degrees and a light 6 mph wind out of the east.
"A large high pressure system extending from the eastern states out into the north Atlantic will remain over the area through Friday, with temperatures several degrees above normal, especially during the daytime," the weather service said in its late Thursday afternoon regional summary.
But Friday night, it will become increasingly cloudy with a low of around 36, the weather service said.
Saturday a low pressure system is expected to move in along with rain, mainly after 10 a.m. The high temperature should be near 46 but a northeast wind will blow at 10 to 15 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100% and between three quarters and an inch is possible.
The forecast says rain is likely Saturday night, mainly before 9 p.m. The low should be around 36.
The weather service said Sunday will be partly sunny, with a high near 45, and Sunday night partly cloudy with a low around 33.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week are all expected to be partly sunny with highs in the mid to low 40s, the weather service said.
