Long Island forecast: Warm, humid conditions to continue

Early morning clouds gave way to mostly sunny skies Thursday over Long Island, with possible showers and thunderstorms for some spots later in the afternoon, forecasters said.

There’s a slight chance for areas of Nassau County closer to New York City to see a shower or thunderstorm later in the afternoon, said Jay Engle, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. The main action was expected to follow a similar path to that of Wednesday’s, with storms moving diagonally up through the LaGuardia Airport area and into Connecticut.

Daytime temperatures were forecast to hit a high in the mid-80s Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, and they could inch up close to 90 by Sunday, forecasters said.

Shortly before noon Thursday, Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma was reporting partly sunny skies, with a temperature of 85 degrees, feeling more like 93 thanks to the humidity

“It is steamy,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said. "Very humid conditions continue once again."

There is a high risk of rip currents at the Island's ocean-facing beaches through Thursday evening, the National Weather Service said.

The better chance for the Island to see some shower and thunderstorm activity is Friday night into Saturday, Engle said. The weather service said Thursday that there’s “a low chance of flash flooding from late Friday night through Saturday morning.”

Sunday, however, should be dry and mostly sunny, forecasters said.
