PSEG Long Island’s outage map reported 1,316 customers in Brookhaven Town had outages but power should be restored by 11:45 p.m. Thursday. Overall, 1,549 customers, nearly all in Suffolk County, were facing outages, according to PSEG Long Island.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning through 7:15 p.m. Thursday for most of Suffolk County.
The system was expected to head northeast at 25 mph with the potential for quarter-size hail.
"Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects," the weather service said in a special statement. "Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible."
After the storm system passed, a warm night was forecast with more summer weather through the weekend before showers become a possibility Sunday evening.
The weather service said that Friday will be sunny with a high temperature near 83 degrees, which is exactly the normal high for the date in Islip. A north wind of around 7 mph is predicted to become southerly in the afternoon.
Friday night is expected to be mostly clear with a low of around 68 degrees.
Both Saturday and Sunday should be mostly sunny with highs in the low 80s, but
Sunday night there is a 40% chance of showers, the weather service said.
As the new workweek starts Monday, there will be a similar probability for showers and thunderstorms. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are all expected to be sunny although there is a chance rain Wednesday night.
High temperatures Monday through Thursday are expected to be from 85 to 87 degrees.
