The cold, and a sneak peek of snow, is here.
Long Island saw scattered snow flurries — mostly in the hours just before sunrise Thursday — but there was no accumulation, the National Weather Service said.
The rest of Thursday should be dry on Long Island. The highs in the mid-30s should be a few degrees below normal.
Highs don’t go above 40 until next week as a cold front moves through the area, and a coastal storm could bring some measurable snow this weekend, but not much, forecasters said.
It was windy Thursday morning, with gusts around 30 to 35 mph, peaking around 40 mph, according to the weather service.
Those gusts mean wind chills in the teens and 20s on Thursday. The winds should diminish into Saturday. Thursday night's lows are from the midteens to about 20.
Friday, also dry, should have highs near 30 and lows from 15 to 20. Clouds move in Saturday, with highs near 30 again.
The weekend's snow begins Saturday night into Sunday, which should have highs in the low 30s. As of now, the computer models show a path that would produce light snow, News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.
His prediction as of Thursday morning: 1 to 3 inches.
“It will be a close call and a slight change in track could mean more snow,” Hoffman said.
The heaviest snow is expected to stay south, in Virginia and mid-Atlantic states.
“Fifty miles in storm track makes all the difference,” Hoffman said. “If the storm moves north expect a lot more snow.”
