Temperatures on Long Island should rise Friday and through the weekend with a high pressure front over the region, according to the National Weather Service.

After a low of 28 degrees expected overnight Thursday, the Island should see a high near 51 on Friday with mostly cloudy skies. The wind Friday should be out of the southwest at 8 to 15 mph.

"The region will undergo a warming trend through the weekend," the weather service said in its regional forecast Thursday afternoon.

The service predicted a low of around 45 degrees Friday night with patchy fog after 11 p.m. followed by patchy drizzle after 4 a.m. Saturday.

For Saturday, the service said, there will be a slight chance of showers after 7 a.m. and areas of fog. Otherwise, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a high temperature near 57. The chance of precipitation is 20%.

The weather service sees a 50% chance of showers for Saturday night and areas of fog with a low around 52.

Showers are likely early Sunday morning with the clouds gradually clearing amid breezy conditions. The high is expected to be near 62 degrees, the weather service said.

The start of the new workweek Monday will bring partly sunny skies and a high near 47, with Long Island expected to stay dry until Tuesday night, when there will be a 30% chance of rain.
